The Philadelphia Eagles signed their eighth (out of nine) rookie from the 2021 NFL Draft — JaCoby Stevens.
A MAN OF MANY TRAITS
Stevens began his collegiate career at Louisiana State University as a safety and wide receiver. As a sophomore, he landed a permanent position as safety, starting the last four games of the season. The following year was Stevens’ first full season. He completed 85 tackles, 8.5 tackles for a loss, and five sacks with three interceptions.
In fact, he played so well that during the 2020 season, LSU selected Stevens to wear the No. 7 jersey — a number that historically goes to the leading playmaker on the team.
The Philadelphia Eagles selected Stevens in the sixth round (No. 224 overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft. However, rather than safety, he was listed as a linebacker.
Last month, Stevens stated, “I know that’s one of the things people are questioning because I’m playing linebacker here for the Eagles, and I played safety at LSU. And that’s one thing that I said; I basically played linebacker at LSU as well. It’s just a position title.”
STEVENS’ FUTURE WITH THE BIRDS
Though Stevens doesn’t necessarily fit the mold 100% at any position he’s played, his versatility is a strength that Philadelphia will utilize.
Stevens stated, “The things that you go back and watch on film at LSU, those are the same things I’m going to try to do here for the Eagles. I’m always going to be a smart player. I’m going to be a player that plays with a lot of passion, a player that’s going to play fast and be very explosive on the field.” He continued, “I think my game translates, regardless of what position and what level. I’m just excited to be here [in Philly] and show those coaches and scouts that defended me and drafted me here are right.”
The 22-year-old will likely compete with Davion Taylor and K’Von Wallace for a spot on defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon’s roster.
Stevens’ rookie contract includes the following:
- 2021: $692,677
- 2022: $857,677
- 2023: $972,677
- 2024: $1,087,677
Stevens’ contract follows Smith, Williams, McPhearson, Gainwell, Tuipulotu, Jackson, and Johnson. Second-round selection Landon Dickerson remains unsigned.
