According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Eagles are set to sign 23-year-old defensive tackle Kobe Smith.
Smith went undrafted out of South Carolina following the 2020 NFL Draft and latched on with the Tenessee Titans. He was cut before the 2020 season but later signed to their practice squad before being released again in early 2021.
Following that release, Smith would sign a reserve/future contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Once again, he was released before the 2021 season and re-signed to their practice squad.
Despite signing another reserve/future contract with the Bucs this past February, Smith was released in May.
Smith Offers Training Camp And DT Depth
The 6-foot, 2-inch, 312-pound Smith now joins a crowded DT group that includes Fletcher Cox, Marlon Tuipulotu, Javon Hargrave, Jordan Davis, Noah Ellis, Milton Williams, Marvin Wilson, and Renell Wren.
In terms of skills, Smith isn’t exactly a pass disruptor – he had just two sacks and seven TFL over his four-year college career.
Suffice to say, it’s extremely unlikely he’s anything more than a depth body as of right now, one that will help veterans like Cox and Hargrave stay healthy by taking away some of their reps during camp.
Still, considering the Eagles love to build through the trenches, perhaps they see something in Smith and plan on re-signing him to the practice squad.
