In a “shocking” twist of events, the Eagles are sellers, unlike what Howie Roseman claimed. The team announced today it has traded backup quarterback Joe Flacco to the Jets in exchange for a sixth-round pick. According to Adam Schefter, that pick can become a fifth-rounder based on play time.
With that, Flacco returns to team he spent all of 2020 with. Flacco — who signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal in the offseason — never played a down for the Eagles, and performed mediocrely in the preseason. Gardner Minshew will now step in as QB2 for the Birds, with newly acquired Reid Sennet fitting into the third-string spot.
The Eagles Win The Trade By A Landslide
It’s really fair to wonder what Joe Douglas and the 1-5 Jets are doing. Yes, they just lost Zach Wilson for two-to-four weeks with an injury, and Flacco is better than any backup they currently have on their roster.
But it’s not like they were in the thick of a divisional race. They’re just wasting a sixth/fifth-round pick for a player that’ll give them average play at best for four games that will most likely turn out to be meaningless. Bizarre.
For the Eagles, this is a great trade regardless of where the pick ends up. Even with Jalen Hurts struggling, Flacco was never going to receive any playing time. Additionally, Gardner Minshew would have likely jumped ahead of Flacco in the event of an injury to Hurts due to his higher upside. Now the Eagles get another shot at finding a diamond in the rough.
With the trade, the Eagles now have 11 draft picks, two of which are conditional and could turn into higher picks. Philadelphia could also have four fifth-round picks come April, if Flacco is able to hit the playing time requirement.
Round | How Pick Was Acquired |
---|---|
1st | Eagles' own pick |
1st | Dolphins' pick- Acquired in 2020 Draft trade |
2nd | Colts' pick- Acquired in Carson Wentz trade (can become 1st) |
2nd | Eagles' own pick |
3rd | Eagles' own pick |
4th | Eagles' own pick |
5th | Eagles' own pick |
5th | WFT pick- Acquired in 2020 Draft trade |
5th | Cardinals' pick- Acquired in Zach Ertz trade |
6th | Jets' pick- Acquired in Joe Flacco trade (can become 5th) |
6th | Colts' pick- Acquired in Matt Pryor trade |
This is exactly the type of ammunition needed for a team lacking severe talent across the board. Now, the only question left is if Howie Roseman should be the one to make the draft picks.
