In a surprising move, the Eagles have signed former Browns cornerback Greedy Williams to a one-year deal, according to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.
Williams, 25, was taken by the Browns in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft. He’s played in 39 games, registering 99 tackles, 2 interceptions and 12 passes defended.
Last year, Williams only appeared in 11 games (one start) and had a PFF score of 52.2.
Though Williams was only targeted 10 times, he allowed a 90.0% completion percentage, a 158.3 passer rating and gave up over 18 yards per completion, all career-worsts.
Williams provides good upside, but risks remain
Obviously, few probably expected Philadelphia to address corner after what’s transpired over the past few days.
With James Bradberry returning on a three-year deal and Darius Slay coming back with a renegotiated contract, it seemed like the position was set, especially with Avonte Maddox in the fold.
Still, ensuring depth at the position is a great move, especially when both starters are set to head into their 30’s while Maddox’s availability has been inconsistent throughout his career.
Williams’ youth and starting experience (21 starts) could fit in nicely with the team, and he’ll get the opportunity to continue learning under some of the league’s best.
Of course, injuries have held Williams back throughout his career. He’s never played a full season, and missed all of 2020 with a nerve injury in his shoulder.
If he can turn around his bad luck, Williams might just be another piece the Eagles could retain beyond 2023.
