SAFETY MOVES: EAGLES SIGN CHAUNCEY GARDNER-JOHNSON
The Eagles’ defense is in full rearrangement this week. On Tuesday, August 30, Philadelphia traded for New Orleans Saints’ safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.
The Saints drafted him in the fourth-round of the 2019 NFL Draft. In seven starts, he finished his rookie year with 49 total tackles, one interception for 28 yards, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and four quarterback hits. He was named to Pro Football Focus’ All-Rookie Team.
After recording his first career sack in 2020, the Saints brought him on as a starting safety for the 2021 season. He has a career total of 157 tackles, three sacks, 27 pass deflections, and five interceptions in only three seasons.
The 24-year-old will now bring a younger, powerful presence to the Philadelphia Eagles who have been looking to rebuild their team since last offseason. Gardner-Johnson will replace both Jaquiski Tartt and Anthony Harris who were both released by the team this week.
Jaquiski Tartt is a veteran who started his career with the San Francisco 49ers. He agreed to terms with the Eagles earlier this offseason. He has 367 career tackles, four sacks, 18 pass deflections, and four interceptions over seven seasons.
Anthony Harris played for the Minnesota Vikings for six seasons before joining the Eagles in 2021. He has 356 career tackles, zero sacks, 28 pass deflections, and ten interceptions.
Comparing stats to seasons played, the Eagles come out on top with their newest member.
The deadline for continued roster moves is 4pm today.
