Eagles cut five more players as second roster deadline expires

Posted on August 25, 2021

The league’s second roster deadline expired August 24, and with that, the Philadelphia Eagles have cut five more players from the team.

This all follows the roster moves to cut Kerryon Johnson, Casey Tucker, and Luke Juriga last week.

EAGLES ROSTER MOVES

Lavert Hill – Cornerback

Hill is a cornerback out of Michigan who signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He was waived during final roster cuts, signed to the practice squad, and released two months later. The Philadelphia Eagles signed hill to their practice squad shortly after. He signed a reserve/futures contract in 2021.

At the cornerback position, the Eagles currently have Darius Slay, Avonte Maddox, and Zech McPhearson. They also acquired Steven Nelson from the Pittsburgh Steelers recently. Philadelphia cut Hill on August 22.

Jhamon Ausbon – Wide receiver

Ausbon is a wide receiver from Texas A&M. He went unselected during the 2021 NFL draft; the Eagles signed him as an undrafted free agent.

After acquiring DeVonta Smith in the first round of this year’s draft and Jalen Reagor the year prior, this position was difficult to compete for. Quez Watkins is having an outstanding camp; and Greg Ward and Travis Fulgham are likely to make the roster.

Ausbon was cut on August 22.

Hakeem Butler – Wide receiver/Tight end

Hakeem Butler has been signed by three different teams since he was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2019 NFL draft. However, he has not played a single NFL game yet. He was placed on the injured reserve list before his rookie season after suffering a broken hand. He was waived by the Cardinals in 2020 and later signed to the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed Butler, Converting him to a tight end from a wide receiver. Currently, the Eagles have Dallas Goedert, Zach Ertz, and Richard Rogers. The team cut Butler on August 23.

Harry Crider – Center

Crider gained a starting role his junior year at Indiana. In the 2021 NFL Draft, he went unselected, and the Philadelphia Eagles signed him as an undrafted free agent.

It’s no surprise that Philadelphia cut him from the team. Jason Kelce will return for another year after announcing he is not retiring. The team also drafted Landon Dickerson to follow in Kelce’s footsteps for future seasons. Crider is no longer on the roster as of August 23.

Joe Ostman – Linebacker

Ostman has been with the Eagles since 2018, spending the entire season on the practice squad. The following year he signed a reserve/future contract and was later placed on the injured reserve list after tearing his ACL.

He was waived during final roster cuts in 2020, later signing to the practice squad. He became elevated to the active roster and played last season for three weeks. While it could have been likely to keep Ostman around, the Eagles have gained back [now] healthy defensive veterans. Philadelphia also has Alex Singleton, who had a breakout year last season, and they signed Eric Wilson in the offseason.

The Eagles cut the linebacker on August 24.

FINAL ROSTER CUTS

The next and final roster cut is next Tuesday, August 31. The league will have to reduce their team to 53 players.
