The team confirmed the news on Thursday night, just seven weeks after the Jaguars fired Urban Meyer.
Jaguars owner Shad Khan stated, “Doug Pederson four years ago won a Super Bowl as head coach of a franchise in pursuit of its first world championship. I hope Doug can replicate that magic here in Jacksonville, but what is certain is his proven leadership and experience as winning head coach in the National Football League. It’s exactly what our players deserve. Nothing less. Combine this with his acumen on the offensive side of the ball, and you have why I am proud to name Doug Pederson the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Khan continued, “I know our fans will warmly welcome Doug and his family to Duval, and I personally look forward to having Doug as part of everything we envision for the team, downtown, and community in the years ahead.”
Pederson began his NFL coaching career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009, becoming head coach in 2016. In five seasons, he went 42-37-1, made three playoff appearances, and took home the covenant Super Bowl champion title.
In 2020, the Eagles had a disastrous season, finishing 4-11-1. The team fired Pederson and traded quarterback Carson Wentz, marketing themselves as a rebuild. Pederson spent the 2021 season out of football, having his first interview with the Jaguars in December. After interviewing nine other candidates, Pederson was announced for the role yesterday.
The Jaguars finished last season 3-14 and have the first pick in the upcoming NFL draft. Unfortunately, they have had only one winning season since 2007.
PEDERSON TO FACE FAMILIAR FACES IN 2022
As Pederson gets to work in Jacksonville, he’ll face some familiar faces in the 2022 season. In Weeks 3 and 5, the Jaguars will play the Indianapolis Colts in what will be the first time Pederson and Wentz will share the same field since 2020.
Wentz spent last season as the Colt’s starting QB, improving his game since being with the Eagles. He completed 3,563 passing yards and 27 touchdowns with a 94.6 passer rating. The Colts missed the playoffs after ironically losing to the Jaguars in their last regular-season game, 26-11.
In Week 13 the Jaguars then play the Philadelphia Eagles. The last time both teams played each other was in 2018 in London, with a 24-18 victory in favor of the Eagles.
