A dual-threat: Why NFL teams should worry about Jalen Hurts

Posted on September 19, 2022

Big things are awaiting Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts this season.

Now in his third season, Hurts is hoping to prove critics wrong and secure a contract extension leaving him as the new face of Philadelphia’s franchise.

After Week 1 of the 2022 season, Hurts played his 20th professional career start. And, here’s how he matches up against some budding quarterbacks across the league.

WHERE DOES JALEN HURTS RANK AMONG QB’S?

Earlier this offseason ESPN released their 2022 Top-10 Quarterback rankings, and I agree that Jalen Hurts shouldn’t be on it. But, that doesn’t mean he won’t be soon.

Looking at the quarterbacks who are of similar age to Hurts (24), how does he stack up? Below is a look at each of these quarterback’s first 20 NFL starts.

Hurts falls in line with some of the best, in both the passing and the rushing game. In fact, he doesn’t come in “last” in any particular category. And, although, he got a lot of heat for his arm, Hurts and the Eagles led the league with the most rushing yards last season.

In his first full season, Hurts finished with 265 of 432 attempts for 3,144 passing yards and 16 passing touchdowns. He also added 784 rushing yards and ten rushing touchdowns to his repertoire.

Hurts is now one week into his second full season (third overall). In Philadelphia’s Week 1 game against the Detroit Lions, he was among the highest-graded quarterbacks with an 80.8. Hurts also became the first Eagles’ quarterback in 60+ years to complete 90 rushing yards and one touchdown without having a turnover. Extending his resume, he also had 300+ total offensive yards without a turnover.

The 24-year-old is now preparing for Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings during Monday Night Football. He will look to extend Philadelphia 2.0, as he works on his arm strength and accuracy.
